Windows 11 26H2 is now broadly available to eligible 24H2 and 25H2 PCs
Microsoft has marked Windows 11 version 26H2 as fully available for devices running Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. The update began rolling out on September 29, but availability was initially phased rather than offered to every eligible PC at once.
Microsoft’s updated support guidance says users can open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. PCs with Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available enabled may download and install 26H2 automatically.
The rollout applies specifically to eligible systems already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. If the update does not appear, the PC may already have it, or Microsoft may still be applying an upgrade safeguard to address a compatibility concern. Microsoft’s guidance says safeguard holds can affect devices where a known compatibility issue could interfere with the update experience.
How to check whether 26H2 is installed
Windows Update is not the only place to verify the version. Go to Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. A system showing version 26H2 and Build 26300 has already received the annual update, even if Windows Update is not currently offering anything new.
For PCs moving from 24H2 or 25H2, 26H2 is built on the same underlying platform and uses a small enablement package to switch on the new release designation. That means users should not expect a dramatic visual overhaul. Windows Latest reported that its test installation completed in less than five minutes, but that result should be treated as an observed test outcome rather than a guarantee for every PC.
The same report says the enablement package is 174KB, considerably smaller than many conventional cumulative updates. The practical result is that the installation can be relatively quick when the device is already on the matching platform.
A small update with support implications
Although 26H2 may bring few immediately visible changes for users upgrading from 24H2 or 25H2, the version still matters for servicing. Windows Latest reports that Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro support has ended, while 25H2 has less than a year of remaining support runway for those editions. Moving to 26H2 therefore gives supported systems a newer release position, even when the day-to-day interface looks much the same.
The report also points to memory and responsiveness improvements associated with recent Windows updates. However, those improvements are not exclusive to 26H2: Microsoft is also delivering them to Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. That makes the update more significant from a version and support perspective than from a feature perspective.
Microsoft’s confirmation of full availability is separate from reports that the company is preparing broader forced installations. Windows Latest expects automatic installation to become more likely for PCs approaching or past the end of support, but the timing and exact scope of that next phase are not confirmed in the evidence available here.
For now, users on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 can check their version number, review Windows Update, and decide whether to install 26H2 when it is offered. The update may be quick and largely invisible, but its release designation could be the more important change.
